Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki trial continues at Tribunal despite NLC strike

The trial of Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki continued on Wednesday at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar has said he would go ahead with the trial despite a strike action caused by Nigeria’s Labour Unions.

Saraki is facing a 16-count charge of false declaration of asset while he was governor of Kwara state.
He has since pled not guilty to the charges describing them as false and frivolous, adding that charges were calculated to rubbish him.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the CCT Chairman urged the trial to continue until uncertainties over organised labour’s strike are resolved.

Saraki is already at the tribunal with his contingent of lawyers and supporters. Journalists have also returned to the courtroom.

Cross-examination of prosecution witness, Michael Wetkas also continued today with Paul Usoro, a counsel to Saraki, doing the questioning.

On Tuesday, the Tribunal insisted that only the lead counsel could cross-examine the witness.
The Tribunal Chairman said that the records of the Tribunal showed that there were about 100 counsels for the defence.

According to him, there had been too many counsels cross-examining the witness, a situation he said could make the process untidy.
