He's flying high as the star of Cannes Film Festival's must-see film, Mad Max: Fury Road.

Though Tom Hardy has taken the time to reflect on one of the hardest times of his life this week, as he reveals he's lucky to be alive following serious drug addiction.

Tom, who's now been sober for over 10 years, told Yahoo! New Zealand on Wednesday that he would have 'sold his mother for crack' at the peak of his debilitating cocaine habit.

Hollywood hunk Tom, who is visiting Cannes to debut his role as titular character Max this week, said he once would have stopped at nothing for another hit.

He said: 'I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack. I was a shameful suburban statistic. I was told very clearly, "You go down that road, Tom, you won't come back.

That's it. All you need to know." That message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am f***ing lucky to be here.'

The actor gives up some of his hardman glory to Charlize Theron in his latest film, Mad Max, because the fearsome blonde takes on furious Imperator Furiosa.

Charlize, who was stunning at the Cannes premiere on Wednesday, slightly stole the show from the handsome bearded actor, who has bulked up for the film.

Tom quit drugs in 2003 and has previously referred to his addiction as a 'disease' that could easily 'destroy' everything he's worked for.

Tom initially kept his habits hidden because he didn't want anyone to know he'd got out of control but the actor said he was lucky he didn't wind up with AIDs.

The actor, son of writer Edward Hardy and artist mother Anne, checked himself into rehab that year after finding himself in pool of blood and vomit in London's Soho after a heavy night.

He's had his fair dealings with trouble, first being expelled from boarding school for stealing and then falling into a spiral of short jail stays for disorderly conduct and also gun possession.
